Genesis of the concept: The Fasting Walk, a 360 km trek without eating in Canada in August 2018
DO YOU HAVE ANY DIFFICULTIES FASTING EVEN THOUGH YOU KNOW IT WOULD BE GOOD FOR YOU?!
This is why Florian developed a simple solution: to go in a group with backpacks to trek in nature. One might think that during a fast, physical strength would be lacking and that it would not be wise, nor even possible, to walk all day. And yet…
It all started when Florian began his transition to raw food in 2014, following a spontaneous fast (naturally imposed by his body) during which he experienced a period of great physical well-being. Troubled by this experience that contradicted his beliefs, particularly the one that says we need to eat to have energy, he researched raw food and then reevaluated everything he thought he knew about the subject. Awed by this pranic experience that fell from the sky, he wished to replicate it, in vain: all the fasts attempted afterward were difficult, and he could not relive the state of grace he had tasted.
The idea then came to him to return to Canada, a country he had crossed by non-motorized means in 2015-2016 (read the account of the America Extrema expedition). Florian thought that by being in nature and walking all day, he would no longer think about eating and would relive that fluidity of body and mind.
Thus, in August 2018, Florian returned to the Mackenzie Mountains with filmmaker Damien Artero to create the documentary ‘The Fasting Walk’ about a particular experience: 2 weeks and 360 km of trekking without eating in one of the wildest environments: grizzly bear mountains under the Arctic Circle and dozens of glacial rivers to cross. It was a revelation as it amazed Florian about the seemingly limitless capabilities of the human body and the benefits it brought him on physical, mental, and spiritual levels. So much so that upon his return to France, he could only think about replicating the experience, but closer to home.
Thus was born the concept of Fasting and Trekking: to offer 7-day treks while fasting to groups of a maximum of 20 people.

Account of JT n°1 in April 2019 / Beaujolais
It had been a long time since the Haut-Beaujolais mountains had seen pilgrims walk for several days without eating. This unusual event took place from April 29 to May 3, 2019. Where pilgrims who did not believe in God but in life set out, not for a holy land, but for better health.
Geoffrey, Anne, Christian, Agnès, Jérôme, Florence, Mickaël, and Marine, aged 26 to 60 and coming from all corners of France (and even Germany) gathered at my place in Gibles (71) on April 28, the day before departure. All driven by the desire to discover the charms of Brionnais and Haut-Beaujolais in minimalist attire, with just a few kilos of gear on their backs to camp. An ultra-light trek made possible by the absence of food, which frees movement and temporarily liberates from the constraint of eating.
After a collective castor oil purge taken on the morning of departure, we set off into the cool fog towards St Cyr (771 m), the highest point in Southern Burgundy, where a journalist from the Journal de Saône-et-Loire awaited us. For we live in a strange time where it is enough to humbly do what one is genetically programmed to do to make it into the newspaper. It was time for the first abandonment. The 18% slopes of St Cyr had exhausted Anne, who was dropped off at my place by the journalist to continue fasting in more comfortable conditions.
The remaining 8 participants are motivated and in good shape, we continue smoothly on the GR 7 towards Mont Saint-Rigaud. With about 35 km for 800m of positive elevation, it is the most demanding stage of the journey but not the most exhausting thanks to our state of freshness. Just before reaching the summit of Saint-Rigaud (1009 m), we drink from the so-called “miraculous” water source where there are about a hundred makeshift crosses made of branches taken from the site, as tradition dictates for wishes to come true. We then set up camp at the foot of the belvedere, where, in ancient times, the Romans had erected an altar to Jupiter.
Up there, the night is cool (3°C) and few have slept well, but the morning laughter testifies to the strength of the group and the walk quickly warms us up. We take advantage of a clearing in the underbrush to shower under the waterfall before resuming the GR 7. With the significant elevation, the first signs of fatigue appear and we shorten the stage after only 25 km. We then camp in a meadow with a magnificent view of the Azergues valley and practice kirtan kriya meditation facing our God: the Sun!
The next day, on the 3rd day, we visit the largest Douglas firs in Europe located in the municipality of Claveisolles, right next to two small ponds. It is the most beautiful day of the trek, sunny with 18°C in the afternoon, but an 8 km ascent with 500m of positive elevation is a tough blow for the group, which multiplies stops. Nevertheless, we all arrive together at the ridge line where we take a break in the sun to recharge our batteries and dry tents and sleeping bags. As we descend towards the lake of the Pines, I sense discomfort in the group and Mickaël, who interviews them one by one for a report, confirms it to me. We still manage to cover 30 km during the day to camp on the shores of the lake of the Pines.
An evening circle of words is necessary and we redefine the program. I promise that the stages will now be shorter and less arduous, moreover, we will return earlier than planned due to the snow forecast for the end of the week. Everyone seems to agree, but the next day, wherever we go, Beaujolais remains steep and the accumulated fatigue takes over. So, in the middle of the day, Geoffrey, Marine, Florence, and Christian decide to stop and get transported back to my place. They have just completed about 110 km fasting, which is already quite something for a first time! But, at that moment, I see the glass half empty and it affects my morale. Especially since the weather is worsening and forecasts confirm the arrival of snow for Saturday. Of the 4 “survivors,” we then unanimously decide to return on Friday evening.
That very evening, the cool drizzle combined with the wind prompts us to find better shelter than our tent. Fortunately, we find an abandoned sheepfold and sleep in the straw, which amuses all four of us and turns out to be very comfortable. The sweetest of nights, in fact. In the early morning, we quickly cover the last kilometers to be back home in the afternoon. We could all four continue, but this 5-day group experience has already been a beautiful adventure and no one wishes to continue under the snow… So we simply decide to extend the fast by one day and only resume eating the next day with vegetable juices.
Although it unfolded differently than I had hoped, I greatly enjoyed this walk with strangers who became friends in just a few days. We laughed and all learned from each other. It was a richly rewarding experience. And then, I would even say especially!, this contact with people willing to change themselves and act (not just talk!) for a better world warmed my heart.
So, “Hunger” (haha!) for the story? No, because I hope instead that this is just the beginning… I wish to lead other groups of fasting trekkers in Beaujolais, and, for his part, Mickaël wishes to do the same in the Vosges.

Accounts of JT No. 12 in May 2023 / Morvan
We were 12 souls from France and Switzerland gathered in the heart of Morvan for a unique adventure, knowing that the weather would not be kind. Despite the rain that was present from the start, we managed to stay focused on our goal without experiencing too much discomfort. Like magic, we always had a break in the clouds at the right place and the right time to dry our gear and sleep dry. The few navigation errors even allowed us to sleep in strong energetic places and finish the trek under the sun and in style with Lake Settons.
In the end, 143 km, 3000m of elevation gain, with an exceptional group, united, funny, spiritual, and unforgettable moments spent around the fire, beautiful music, singing, breathwork, and wonderful exchanges.
Thank you life for these moments of grace where I experienced that gentleness and listening combined with discipline and determination form a magical cocktail that allows us to face difficult situations with love and wonder.

Accounts of JT No. 13 in August 2023 / Vercors
We were 20 living adventurers from all corners of France gathered in the somewhat austere forests of Vercors. We managed to cope with the lack of water, a hailstorm, cool nights in tents, unforeseen events, and fatigue by finding within each of us the inexhaustible source of energy and love that drives us. It is this jewel that every human being harbors that allows us to traverse all of life’s trials and appreciate the journey even when hunger and thirst are present!
In the end, 55 km, 1200m of elevation gain, with a diverse group sharing the pleasures of trekking, sungazing, singing, breathwork, and rich exchanges!
Once again, thank you life for these unique experiences where hygiene and humanism become one!

Accounts of JT No. 14 in September 2023 / Lozère
And off we go for a new fasting and trekking adventure of 7 days, this time in Lozère, with a highly motivated group!!
Step 1 Program: breathwork with an intention set for the fast, 27 km walking on the GR43 under the sun with baths in the rivers and Lake Charpal. And to end the day: mantra singing and sungazing.
Nothing like it to unload negative energies and fill up with love and joy in contact with nature, which is so generous.
Thank you life!
Days 2 & 3 on the fasting and trekking!
The tribe continues on the sunny paths of Lozère where we seize every opportunity to swim in the rivers, like the Lot, when they present themselves and to exchange on all the topics that matter to us.
The cohesion of the group and the power of nature nourish us on other levels that make us forget the absence of food.
For 7 days, hunger is no longer part of our world.
The current side activities: breathwork and yoga. The highlight of the day: the ascent of Mont Lozère at 1699 with a clear view, which is rare for it.
Thank you life for all these wonderful moments, with all the power of simplicity!
Accounts of JT No. 15 in February 2024 / Morocco
What a memorable week in Morocco! Departure on foot from M’Hamid for a five-day trek in the desert. After about six hours of walking each day, we pitch our tent in the sand and end the day around a fire lit by our guides. All this while fasting, expertly supervised by Florian Gomet, who organizes several such retreats each year.

Accounts of JT No. 16 in May 2024 / Morvan
Last Wednesday marked the end of a fasting and trekking adventure of 135 km in Morvan that I will not soon forget, as it rained with temperatures below 10°C!
Fortunately, we could count on the providential shelter of a yurt from the Lagoon farm where we took refuge every night, except for the one spent by Lake Settons.
There we met Joël, the owner of the yurt, a former mason turned market gardener and beekeeper preparing to leave in a few days on the Camino de Santiago, who took us on a journey with sound baths.
This confronting weather ultimately transformed the fasting and trekking into a very friendly adventure where we had more time to practice conscious breathing, massages, yoga, animal movements, mantra singing, meditation, etc.
Thank you to all the members of this joyful team for their equanimity in all terrains, their kindness, all the laughter, the rich exchanges, and these beautiful photos. And thank you life for this magnificent fasting experience!

Accounts of JT No. 17 in July 2024 / Vosges
A Fasting & Trek (summer version) just took place where we were 6 living adventurers to walk without eating and only on water (no juice, no broth, or herbal tea) about sixty kilometers (with 2500 m of elevation gain) in the Vosges mountains in the area of Bresse and Gérardmer.
Even though it was the thirteenth edition (since the creation of the concept in 2019, following the expedition ‘The Fasting Walk’), all fasting and trekking experiences are different and nothing is ever guaranteed in advance. Even in a short summer format like this one, adventure is always on the agenda. There are falls, morale dips, bad weather that invites itself, the search for a bivouac site, sometimes a lack of water, extra kilometers, unforeseen events, and detoxes to manage…
Kudos to these modern adventurers who stepped out of their comfort zone to live these few days out of time to take a break from the whirlwind of modern life, a step aside to return to oneself, adjust one’s internal GPS, and take care of one’s health thanks to the combined virtues of fasting and hormesis (which go very well together, no matter what they say!).
Thank you all for your participation, your trust, your smiles, and your kindness; it was a beautiful adventure in your company that I enjoyed immensely! Thank you to the Vosges mountains, to its enchanting forests & lakes for welcoming us so well and allowing us to live these precious moments of reconnection to our humanity & to nature.
Thank you Life for all these healing energies we received. It is so invigorating!
Testimony from David, a participant: ‘A great moment that we wish could last forever and at the same time happy to finish it and return to my family. Always so good with these magical and wonderful encounters. Thanks again to Florian for bringing us together. Beautiful life to all.’
Accounts of JT No. 18 in September 2024 / Bugarach in the PO
A few days ago, the 18th edition of the fasting and trekking ended, one more to the count since its creation in 2019.
13 joyful & dynamic living adventurers, barefoot, in sandals or shoes, celebrated the first days of autumn with a 7-day water fast around Pech de Bugarach in Aude.
While coping with cool, humid, and unpredictable weather, we walked daily from 15 to 30 km with up to 1000 meters of elevation gain in the majestic forests of the Corbières massif. In total: 4000m of elevation gain and 120 km of walking.
This immersive adventure in nature fully connected us to its natural rhythm & elements with 12 hours of complete rest at night, a digital detox, hot and cold baths, conscious breathing, movement, meditations, singing, etc.

Accounts of JT No. 19 in May 2025 / Beaujolais
Despite the cool temperatures and humidity encountered last week in Haut-Beaujolais, we walked about 125 km with 4800m of elevation gain while fasting without broth or juice! A natural feat accomplished with the help of the magnificent wooded massifs, countless flowers, heights with breathtaking views, spring waters, and good group cohesion.
A timeless stay where one contacts within oneself their eternal part, the one that gives us unsuspected strength as well as the guidance we need to return to civilization, the body & mind detoxified, filled with energy and joy.
The villagers we met, as well as some naturopaths, wonder: how is it possible to walk while fasting? Is it really good for health? For my part, I always fast with my groups (aged between 18 and 70 years) and, far from being weakened by the fifteenth edition since 2019, I was surprised this time to be almost on a dry fast (one liter of water over the week). To this day, I know nothing more invigorating & purifying for the body and mind…

WE DID IT!!!
The tour of Mont Blanc while fasting in 6.5 days with nights in tents on a route of 170 km with 10,000m of positive elevation gain. A unique fasting and trekking experience that took place from September 4 to 12 under the guidance of Hervé Deschamps, a tailor-made guide for this type of adventure! We were 11 living adventurers, men and women aged 25 to 65, who dared to take on this challenge. With humility and courage, we set off each day to ascend the passes, drawing our energy from the unsuspected resources of the human body. A transformative and purifying experience that solidified our confidence in ourselves and in life. Thank you to the mountains and the elements for allowing us to pass and for giving us strength!
Testimony from Véronique: “First of all, a big thank you for sending the photos; they are magnificent! Regarding our food resumption, we think we succeeded, thanks to our little experience and your great advice. We are still on a little cloud following this achievement of all of us!!!… The emotions continued to ‘come out,’ especially for Jean-Louis, while driving towards Marseille, and our musical supports helped a lot with that! For me, I feel a serenity, an extraordinary well-being, may I keep this state… This is one of the most powerful fasting retreats we have experienced, it reached very deep in every way! We are looking forward to what comes next… which we hope will be in the same state of calm or perhaps even better or different in our Mind and our Body. We are proud to have shared it with you.”
Testimony from Ophélie: “I felt throughout, even in difficulties (and God knows how hard it was on the 5th day), an absolute trust, trust in life, trust in myself, trust in you, in Hervé, and in the group. I am proud and full of gratitude for my body that works so well, and for my heart and soul that dared to open up and let themselves be carried with so much trust. This is to date one of the most beautiful experiences I have had the chance to live after giving life!”
